Genuine Toyota Universal Joints

What is a Toyota Universal Joint?

A Toyota universal joint, commonly known as a U-joint, is a cross-shaped mechanical component found at the ends of a vehicle's tailshaft (propeller shaft). Its primary function is to allow the tailshaft to rotate and transmit power even as the angle between the transmission and the differential changes. This flexibility is essential because your vehicle's suspension constantly moves up and down as you drive over uneven road surfaces.

Is a CV Joint and a U-Joint the same thing?

While both allow for rotation at an angle, they are not the same thing:

  • Universal Joint (U-Joint): Typically found in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles on the longitudinal propeller shaft. They use a simple cross-and-bearing design and are best suited for the relatively small angle changes found in a tailshaft.
  • Constant Velocity Joint (CV Joint): Generally found on drive shafts (axles) in front-wheel drive and independent rear suspension setups. They are designed to deliver power smoothly through much wider angles, such as when the front wheels are turned for steering.

What are the Symptoms of a Bad Universal Joint?

When a U-joint begins to fail, it usually provides several warning signs before total failure occurs:

  • Squeaking Noises: A rhythmic squeaking or chirping sound that increases with vehicle speed often indicates that the internal needle bearings have run dry of grease.
  • Clunking Sound: A loud "clunk" or "thud" when shifting from Park into Drive or Reverse, or when accelerating and decelerating, suggests significant play or "slop" in the joint.
  • Vibrations: High-frequency vibrations felt through the floor or seat, particularly at highway speeds, can indicate that the U-joint is worn and the tailshaft is no longer properly balanced.
  • Shuddering: A noticeable shudder when taking off from a stationary position.

Can You Drive with a Broken Universal Joint?

Driving with a broken or severely worn U-joint is highly dangerous and is not recommended. If a U-joint snaps completely while the vehicle is in motion, the tailshaft can drop and hit the road surface or whip around under the vehicle.
